Ridgecrest Roar – October 8, 2023

RIDGECREST ROAR October 8, 2023

Good evening Ridgecrest families,

Our fundraiser is in full swing. We started with drop-in Yoga this past Wednesday and we have more opportunities to participate in our fundraiser coming up this week. We are so grateful for the support we receive from our community. Thank you! More information about our fundraiser is below in the message from our PTA.

School Information

Ridgecrest is Hiring! – We have a new position available working to support one of our 1st grade classrooms. The position is 20 hours per week. If you are interested in being a part of the Ridgecrest Team, please click here for more information.

Picture Retakes – If your child missed having their picture taken or would like it retaken, their chance is coming up! Picture retakes are scheduled for October 16th. See the attached flier for more information.

Halloween is quickly approaching! – We will be holding our annual Halloween Parade as well as our classroom parties on Tuesday, Oct. 31st. The parade will start at 9:00 inside and we will proceed outside to the parade route by 9:15.  Parents are encouraged to line the parade route and cheer us on. I will attach the parade route in the Oct. 22nd Ridgecrest Roar.

Please help your child to pick an appropriate costume. Here are some guidelines:

  • No face masks or full face paint.  We need to be able to visually identify students in costumes.

  • Costumes that are provocative, revealing, sexual in nature or employ questionable props are not permitted.

  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not permitted.  Fake (or real) weapons are not permitted.

  • Costumes that can be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not permitted.

  • Costumes should not hinder your ability to participate in classes

  • Costumes should include shoes

  • Costumes and dressing up is optional

Safety Drill of the Month: The ‘Secure’ Protocol Explained – Did you know that all Utah schools are now using the same terminology to describe the actions they take in emergencies? Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing information about those new safety protocols to familiarize families with the steps Canyons takes to keep schools welcoming, secure, and prepared. October is the month when CSD elementary schools perform “secure” drills. Secure is a precaution taken to keep staff and students safe indoors when there is a threat or hazard outside of the building. Law enforcement responding to a dangerous activity in the surrounding neighborhood, or even an unsafe dog on the play-ground would be examples of a secure response. When a school has been placed in “secure” mode, the school day continues as normal, and students and employees are free to move about the building. However, all external doors are locked and students and staff are brought inside the school building. Check out this quick explainer video and learn more at canyonsdistrict.org/safe-schools. Learn more at canyonsdistrict.org/safe-schools.

Also, remember, if you ever have questions related to safety at our building you are welcome to reach out to me at any time.

Brighton High School Marching Band – We were fortunate to have the BHS marching band come to perform a small part of their show at Ridgecrest recently. The students had a great time watching this. We want to make you aware that there is an upcoming Friends & Family Night at Brighton next Wednesday, October 11th  at 7:15 PM. This is a free event to attend, or you can also check out their event via live-stream! Click HERE for the live stream option.

Digital Citizenship – Canyons School District Digital Citizenship Week will be October 16-18, 2023. Students will partake in activities that empower them to seek balance in their technology use and to be aware of their online actions. Connect with us throughout the week!

Information previously shared that still might be helpful

Dual Language Program – We have a couple dates coming up that are important for families in our Dual Language Program or who are interested in it for next year.

  • October 2nd – The DLI Lottery will open for students who will be in first grade next school year. To apply for the lottery, click this link. The application process will close on November 21st.

  • Octer 12th – There is a parent meeting for all families who are interested in the DLI program and would like more information before applying for the lottery. This will be from 6:30 – 8:00 PM in the Canyons Center at the district office.

  • Sept. 18- November 3rd – All 5th grade DLI students are asked to complete an Intent to Return form as they transition to middle school. This form can be accessed here as part of the DLI Secondary Orientation:  Secondary DLI Canvas Course. These forms are due on Nov. 3rd.
