RIDGECREST ROAR January 28, 2024
Good evening Ridgecrest families,
We have some fun events coming up in the next couple of weeks. Please join us and consider sharing your time and talents. More information is below.
School Information
Teacher of the Year– Nominations for Teacher of the Year are still open, but they are closing this Friday, February 2nd. Please help us to recognize the teachers at Ridgecrest who work so hard to make a difference in the lives of your children. You can fill out the link multiple times if you are interested in nominating more than one teacher. More information about the selection process, and the nomination form, are found here.
Chinese New Year! – Our annual Chinese New Year celebration will be held Tuesday, February 6th, from 6 to 8. Please remember, this celebration is for our entire school! This year we are going to hold the celebration at Butler Middle School (7530 S. 2700 E.). With this change, we are hopeful that families will be able to better see and hear the student performances by utilizing the auditorium. Please see the attached fliers for more information.
This night will be made successful with many volunteers. If you are able to help volunteer at a station it would be greatly appreciated. Please note the booths all start after the performances, so if you sign up for a booth you will not miss your child’s performance. Please sign up here:

Career Day – We are hosting Career Day on Friday, February 9th from 9:00 – 10:15 AM, but we can’t do it without you! This is such a fun way for our students to familiarize themselves with career options for their future! We need volunteers to speak about their careers, so come share your expertise with our students! Volunteers can be parents, guardians, grandparents, or friends of the family. This is a community event!
For more information see the attached flier. To sign up to participate, please click or visit this link:

Ridgecrest Readers: Our Ridgecrest students have been working really hard to increase the amount of time they spend reading, and it shows! Our recent assessments showed impressive results and we can’t wait to see where we go from here. Keep up the reading!
Staff Recommendations –
My fourth grade teacher read this book to us as a read aloud, and I loved it! I’ve read it many times since. This book is humorous and heartwarming. It is the story of a ten-year-old orphan named Bud who runs away from a foster home. He travels through Michigan in search of his biological father using only a clue left by his mother, flyers for a jazz band called the “Dusky Devastators of the Depression.”

Ms. MacArthur, 4th grade teacher
One of my favorite books in third grade was Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing because I loved reading about the hilarious and often annoying little brother of Peter Hatcher. Farley Drexel (Fudge) Hatcher is full of mischief and hijinks! What I enjoyed most about this book was how easily I could visualize the comical scenes in my head. This book had me laughing out loud! Judy Blume has an entire Fudge series that I read as a child and read again to my own children.

Calling All 5th Grade Students – Butler Middle School and Midvale Middle School are both hosting 5th Grade Orientation Parent Nights soon. All current 5th Grade students and their parents are invited to attend a meeting in the auditorium of their future middle school where they can ask questions and learn about getting ready for the next school year. Details for these visits are:
-
Butler Middle – January 31st at 5:30 PM
-
Midvale Middle – January 30th at 5:30 PM
College and Career Week – We’ll be celebrating College and Career Week 2/5-2/9. Teachers will be talking about college and careers during morning meetings. Adults at school will wear college gear on Thursday, 2/8 and students are welcome to join them! We’ll end the week with Career Day on Friday, 2/9. This is a great time to have conversations with your kids about their plans after high school – it’s never too early to start thinking about college and careers!
From the PTA:
Hello Ridgecrest families! We are excited for the school spelling bee Monday. We can’t wait to see these kids and their wonderful spelling abilities.
Chinese New Year– Our annual Chinese New Year celebration will be held Tuesday February 6th from 6 to 8. Please see the information above. Also, we are still planning on decorating the halls of Ridgecrest for the students to enjoy. We need lots of volunteers to help decorate on Friday February 2nd. We will decorate from 11 until 2. Even if you can only do 30 minutes, during that time, the more hands the better!
PTA Meeting– Our next PTA meeting will be Monday Feb. 5th at noon in the library conference room. We invite anyone that would like to come. It is a great way to see and hear what is going on and coming up in the school.
Thanks,
Suzy Doom
PTA President
