RIDGECREST ROAR Dec 1, 2019
Greetings,
Welcome to December! I hope everyone had a chance to spend time with family and friends and had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We have three weeks of school before our winter break and we have a lot planned. Please check the updated Upcoming Events at the bottom of this newsletter to see events schedule through the end of January.
Have you noticed the new attendance board? We will be updating the attendance board each day. On November 26th we had 93% attendance and 45 students arriving late. We can do better! With your help we can increase our attendance numbers. The board will be by the drop off lane on good weather days and inside the vestibule on wintery days. Let’s get our students to school!
RSL players urge students to ‘be great, miss less than eight’Professional soccer players with Real Salt Lake have a message for Canyons District students: Show up for school and work hard, because no matter your personal goals, education is your ticket to the game of life. RSL, which is headquartered in CSD’s boundaries, is offering a special incentive this year in support of Canyons District’s campaign to encourage students to “Be Great, Miss Less Than Eight” school days. Every student who meets the miss-less-than-eight challenge will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a VIP Experience at RSL, which includes four tickets to a regular season game, a pregame dinner, pregame sideline access and player signatures. Two students from every school also will receive prizes for their efforts. The winners will be announced toward the end of the 2019-2020 school year in mid-May. Nothing is required of principals. The Responsive Services Department will pull from Skyward the names of students who meet the attendance challenge, and notify schools of their winners. The announcement of this campaign is on the CSD website and in this month’s edition of the community newsletter, CSD2U. Administrator Charisse Hilton also appeared on ABC4Utah and KUTV to talk about how student absences spike over the holidays.
Looking to Transfer Schools? Submit Your School Choice Applications Starting Dec. 1Education opens doors. In Canyons District, we believe all children deserve access to a quality education and learning opportunities suited to their interests and needs. Every child is different, and public education isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. School choice means providing parents with options, and the freedom to choose the best options for their child. Under Utah law, students who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school — the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries — may apply to transfer to another school by submitting a Standard Open Enrollment Form. In Canyons District, families are able to submit these forms online from the comfort of their home or office using our Online Permit Portal. For the coming school year, the window for applying for the school-choice permits will open Dec. 1 and end Feb. 21. School transfers are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis. Questions? Please contact Floyd Stensrud in the Office of Planning and Enrollment, 801-826-5180.
