Ridgecrest Roar – October 6, 2024

Principal’s Message

Good evening Ridgecrest families,

Ridgecrest is working hard to make attendance a priority this year. We cannot teach your children if they are not at school. To help incentivize this for our students we select class winners who have shown great attendance each week. These students receive a small prize and the chance to win a scooter multiple times throughout the school year. So far our attendance has remained close to 94% of students at school each day. This is pretty good! Our school goal is 95%. Please help us to reach this by making attendance at school an everyday habit that your family celebrates as well!

Thrive Time

This week we will have our first digital citizenship lesson. We will teach our children about how to be respectful of each other not just in person but online as well. Technology is a big part of our lives and it is important they learn how to use it responsibly!

Million Minute Reading Challenge

Wow, our students are really reading! Students have logged 12,069 minutes on Beanstack this week. This brings our total minutes read for the year up to 57,349 minutes!

Our great participation lead to our school earning the Pathfinder Badge from Road to Success. This badge notes that we have at least 50% of our students participating in our reading challenge so far. Our goal this week is to get every student reading.

Here are our current school stats:

1st Place: Zhao Homeroom2nd Place: Bryner Homeroom3rd Place: Lecker Homeroom

The official Road to Success Challenge started this week and we are off to a great start. Keep it up tigers!

DLI Lottery for 2025-2026 Open!

Are you, or someone you know, interested in enrolling your child in our Chinese Dual Language Program for the 2025-2026 school year, but would like more information? An informational meeting for parents will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Canyons Center at the Canyons District Office, 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy.

The window to apply to enroll your child in Dual-Immersion will continue to be open through Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2024. A lottery will be held to determine entrance into the programs if the number of applicants exceeds the seats available per entering class. Information about CSD’s immersion programs and the application process can be found at canyonsdistrict.org.

Morning Drop Off

Adult supervision is not available before school until 8:25 AM. We are experiencing an increasing number of students who are being dropped off too early which is not safe.

As a reminder:

Children cannot be left at the school before 8:25 AM because they will not be supervised. The only exceptions are for students who are part of a designated activity with an adult in the building or if they eat breakfast starting at 8:15 AM.

Digital Citizenship Week

October 14-16, 2024, Canyons School District will be participating in our annual Digital CitizenshipWeek. As part of the Thrive Time curriculum adopted by the board in June of 2024, students get a lesson approximately every month around digital citizenship issues. Some of the topics include:

● Media balance & well-being

● Privacy & security

● Digital footprints & identity

● Online relationships & communication

● Cyberbullying, digital drama, & hate speech

● News & media literacy

For the week of Digital Citizenship in October, we want to make this a time of celebration, awareness of the importance of digital citizenship, and a reinforcement of the skills they are learning throughout the year. Please take time toask your student about what they are learning and the fun activities they are participating in.

We are also sharing resources for families in the attached fliers if you would like more information on this topic.

Ridgecrest is Hiring!

We have an open position in our school. We are hiring an individual to assist our students during lunch time and supporting small groups in various classes through the day. The position is 24 hours per week. If you are interested in being a part of the Ridgecrest Team, please click here for more information.

Lost and Found

We have a lot of items in our lost and found at Ridgecrest. All items have been laid it out in the flag hallway in the center of our building. We will be encouraging our students to check the lost and found before it is donated on Friday 10/11. You are also welcome to come before or after school to check the lost and found with your child.

Halloween

Halloween is quickly approaching. We will be holding our annual Halloween Parade as well as our classroom parties on Tuesday, Oct. 31st. The parade will start at 9:00 inside and we will proceed outside to the parade route by 9:15. Parents are encouraged to line the parade route and cheer us on. The parade route is attached below.

Dress code still applies on Halloween, so please help your child to pick an appropriate costume. Here are the guidelines from our district policy:

  • No face masks or full face paint. We need to be able to visually identify students in costumes.
  • Costumes that are provocative, revealing, sexual in nature or employ questionable props are not permitted.
  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not permitted. Fake (or real) weapons are not permitted.
  • Costumes that can be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not permitted.
  • Costumes should not hinder your ability to participate in classes
  • Costumes should include shoes
  • Costumes and dressing up is optional

From Our PTA

Hello Ridgecrest Families,

This past week was the first week of our before and after school activities. We truly hope that your students are enriched through what they have chosen to participate in, whether it be Chess, Runners or Book Blitz Jr., we enjoy enhancing their experience at Ridgecrest.

A couple things about the programs:

First, we Love our Volunteers, if you would like to volunteer at the school in any capacity you need to have signed up to volunteer through Canyons District. Here is the link if you have not done that yet. volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org<favicon.ico>

If you plan to volunteer at the Halloween partiers this is necessary. Second, please don’t drop off and leave your student early for these programs. For example, Ridgecrest Runners begins at 7:45 please stay with you student until 7:45. If you drop them off and go there is not an adult there to supervise. Thanks.

The prize winners for our fundraiser were announced and distributed this week. Please check your students’ backpacks, we would don’t want to see those go to waste.
